    • Kreitzberg Library provides electronic and print information resources and services to support all graduate and undergraduate programs.

The Charles A. Dana Category I Lecture Series presents "Design & Synthesis of Antioxidants to Combat Oxidative Stress" with Dr. Emma Barrett, Assistant Professor, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.

Emma Ste. Marie

About the Lecture

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are unstable molecules that react readily with cellular components such as DNA, lipids, and proteins, causing irreversible damage to these important biomolecules. Cellular damage causes or exacerbates a number of illnesses, including cancers, heart disease, and diabetes.

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that can capture and mitigate ROS and prevent them from causing damage to biomolecules. There exists a need for antioxidant therapeutics to combat ROS to prevent and/or treat illnesses related to oxidative stress. In this talk, I summarize research towards the development of novel antioxidant peptides that can combat ROS and the exploration of their potential to function as therapeutics.

About Dr. Barrett

Emma Barrett, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She joined the Chemistry department in Fall 2021 after earning a Ph.D. in Organic chemistry from the University of Vermont, followed by completion of a one-year post-doctoral research fellowship at Boston College. Dr. Barrett researches antioxidants, amino acids, and peptides (small fragments of proteins), and the robust chemistry peptides can facilitate. Dr. Barrett is a native Vermonter and enjoys hiking, swimming, and exploring new places with her daughter.

About the Charles A. Dana Category I Grants

The Charles A. Dana Category I Grants are supported by an endowed fund from the Dana Foundation for the purpose of attracting and retaining faculty of exceptional caliber. Grants are awarded annually to tenure-track faculty who demonstrate superior scholarship, teaching ability, and university service.

Grant recipients participate in the Charles A. Dana Category I Lecture Series during the year in which they receive their awards.
